100 Calorie Snack Scam

100 calorie snack scam

A recent marketing trend in the ‘snack’ world is to offer small portion controlled sizes in 100 calorie packs.

I’ve seen everything from brownies, to chips, chocolate bars, and rice cakes offered in these little snack-packs.

Guess what…

you’re still eating 100 calories of garbage!

Would it be okay to give a recovering alcoholic just a small shot of whiskey?  Or maybe allow an ex-smoker just a couple of smokes?

Of course not!

And while some of you might think the analogy is a little bit of a stretch, I promise you it’s not.

Chocolate, sugar, and all of the chemicals they put in these treat foods these days are every bit as problematic as alcohol, nicotine, and even some of the more illicit drugs.

Don’t believe me?

What happens when you decide to abruptly stop eating sugar when it’s been a staple in your diet?  Withdrawal.  And it aint fun.

We are a society that is ADDICTED to junk food.  Chocolate, bread, pastries, soda, pizza, etc.  All of these foods create chemical responses in your body that are almost impossible to distinguish from drugs and alcohol.

Additionally, all of these foods, if routinely kept in the diet, will make fat loss a constant uphill struggle.

Success in weight loss, fat loss, and getting a lean and toned physique DEPENDS on you getting this junk out of your diet.

Giving yourself a ‘treat’ of 100 calories isn’t fooling anyone, especially your body.

Tell you what…

Instead of eating just a tiny sliver of chocolate (which is about all you’ll get with 100 calories), why not eat some apple slices with a little almond butter?  You’ll load up on tons of vital nutrients and vitamins, get some healthy fat, protein, and carbs, and you’ll actually put something substantial in your stomach to tide you over until the next meal.

Alternatively, the chocolate will only give you a major sugar craving, flood your system with insulin making it impossible to burn fat, leech nutrients from your body, and it won’t put a dent in your hunger.

Make the smart choice.

How to get in shape in time for summer…

April 15, 2009Coach Rylan No Comments »

Are you in shape for summer?  I mean, really in shape.

If I were to take you to the beach today (assuming it was warm enough) would you be perfectly comfortable with the way you look in your bathing suit?

Have you lost the weight you said you were going to lose on New Years Eve?

Have you trimmed the inches off your waist?

Are you ready to show the world what you’ve got?

If you don’t want to waste another summer hiding under oversized clothes and wearing t-shirts over top of your swimwear, then you don’t have any more time to waste.  June is just around the corner and you are seriously running out of time.

The good news is, you can accomplish a lot between now and then….

You could drop 15-25 pounds or more

You could reduce your body fat by up to 5%

You could turn your soft tummy into hard abs

You could lose your man boobs (gentleman)

You could lose your bat-wings (ladies)

You could drop clothing sizes

You could finally be happy with your body.

If you don’t want to spend another summer fat and out of shape like every other summer, then it is imperative that you change something, and change it now.  Most people wait until the heat really starts to come on, and summer is at the doorstep before deciding to do anything.

Of course, the problem with this is that you will be spending the entire summer tring to carve your body into something you are proud of.  Sure you will look great by September, soon enough to enjoy maybe another weekend or two at the beach before it gets too cold.

And you’ll also be missing out on all the barbecues and summer fun while you try and trim down while everyone else is taking it easy.

No more procrastinating folks, this is your last call if you want a great body by summer.

Don’t know how to do it?  Apply for one of my one-on-one personal training programs or online personal training programs and take all the guess work out of it.  Follow the steps I will lay out for you and you will be ready for beach season in 8 weeks.

Transformation Competition For Women Only

March 28, 2009Coach Rylan 1 Comment »

On my sister-site I have just launched an 8 week transformation competition open to women only.

The deadline for entry is fast approaching on April 1st, and there are over $1000 worth of prizes up for grabs to the best three transformations.

Summer is just around the corner ladies, so don’t spend another year covering up and waiting for the cold weather.  In 8 weeks beach season will be in full swing, so don’t leave it until then to do something about it.

Wouldn’t you like to be one of the only women who actually did something about it, and did it in time?

Most folks wait until they have to break out last years shorts, t-shirts, and swimsuits – realizing they are much snugger then they remember – to finally get their butt in gear.  By that time, it’s too late and you might be able to make some changes to your body by the time the kids get back to school.  By that time, summer is over, holidays are done, and you’ve spent another season miserable and embarrased by the way you look.

Hey, I was there once too, so I am speaking from experience.

Check out the transformation competition at my Go Sleeveless Blog to get the details and see the transformation I was able to make in only 30 days.

Food Combining For Fat Loss

March 27, 2009Coach Rylan No Comments »

Is proper food combining the secret to quick and easy fat loss?  What exactly is proper food combining anyway?

A while ago I was asked by one of my client’s about the validity of ‘food combining’.  This is something that quite controversial, so I wanted to do some good solid research before offering my opinion.

So for what it’s worth, here it is…

For those of you who are unsure of what this is all about, there have been numerous ‘experts’ touting the benefits of only combining certain foods with each other at meal times.

The premise is that different foods require different digestive enzymes to be properly broken down and utilized by the body. Furthermore, if this food is improperly digested, then weight gain and digestive troubles are the result.

One of the typical no-no’s touted by food-combining pros is that you should never eat protein and starch in the same meal, as they require different digestive juices, which, if secreted at the same time would neutralize each other resulting in indigestible and rotting food in your digestive tract.

This makes no sense at all.

Nature has provided us with countless food sources that contain both protein and starch in the same food (such as rice), so why would this be so if we were unable to digest them properly?

The following is a quote from Dr. Keith Scott-Mumby MB, ChB, MD, PhD – nutrition and food allergy specialist from the UK – from his book ‘Diet Wise’…

…you may have heard of the “food combining” approach to diet. A lot of elaborate theory is put forth as a justification for the ritual of separating morning, midday, and evening – your body is supposed to be unable to digest proteins and carbohydrates at the same time, some foods are acidic and some are alkaline, and other such fake science. These claims are simply not true. The body is geared to digest fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, sequentially, in different segments o the alimentary tract.

Basically, what Dr. Scott-Mumby is stating here is that digestion does not just take place in the stomach. For instance, sugar digestion starts in the mouth, fats are emulsified in the small intestine and so forth – your body is able to digest all types of food at the same time.

So why are so many people jumping on board this bandwagon if it doesn’t work?

Most likely because food combining severely restricts the types and quantities of food you eat. For example, since starch and protein don’t digest together but veg and protein do (in the eyes of food combining experts) then instead of the hearty serving of mashed potatoes with your roast beef, or nice scoop of pasta with your meatballs, you’ll be substituting vegetables. Also, since fruit is ‘best digested in the morning – and should not be combined with any other food’ your breakfast bowl of sugar laden cereal, cup of coffee, or eggs and bacon, is now replaced by a grapefruit or an apple.

You’ve probably started to see where all the miraculous benefits of food combining really stems from.

So what do I recommend?

Don’t worry so much about not eating certain foods with each other, but rather limit the amount of starches and simple carbs you are taking in (white flour products, sugars) and increase the amount of fresh fruit and veg in your diet. Not because it digests better, but because they are healthier substances and contain high levels of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

That will get you light years ahead in your quest for a better body, and save you a few heahaches when it comes time to plan your meals.
